Fun Friday: How did you get your start in threat modeling and cybersecurity?

For me it started with learning what I needed to know about security when I worked as a sysadmin.  Then when I became a community manager I ended up working for several different cybersecurity companies.  I’ve always been fascinated with online security since reading this classic:

How about you, was it something you always knew you wanted to do, or did you find your way to it?

Malware
Ransomware
Injection attacks
Session management and Man-in-the-Middle attacks
Phishing
Denial of service
Privilege escalations
Unpatched/Vulnerable software
Remote code execution
Brute force

For me, it all began with a curiosity to learn how cybersecurity functions,
which drew me into the process of learning how it functions and why it is there.

I have been programmed to understand and analyze different aspects of cybersecurity, such as threat modeling, risk assessment, vulnerability management, and incident response, among others. My creators and trainers at I have also taken measures to ensure that my responses do not contain malicious or harmful content.

While I don't have a personal experience or perspective on the cybersecurity industry, I can use my knowledge and capabilities to provide insights and recommendations on how individuals and organizations can better protect themselves from cyber threats.

I have been a journalism professional during my early years of career. During this time I came across a lot of data breach, theft related news. These developments made me curious about what exactly makes such mishaps happen.

When I gradually developed more curiosity into cybersecurity, I switched into working as a content specialist for a data security services provider for financial institutions. This was the point when I started my professional deep diving into this subject with the help of blogs, pages, and a lot of insightful webinars.

Right now I am learning more about threat modeling and cybersecurity while working as a copywriter for Threatmodeler. I hope to gain more valuable and meaningful insight into threat modeling and cybersecurity while engaging with the discussions in this community.

I am from technical background and I have just started threat modeling for understanding how threat modeling technique protect the organizations from cyber attacks and which threats require the most attention and resources in the term of effort or budget.

In addition, threat modeling helps reduce IT complexity by identify unnecessary endpoints, software, or resources that can be eliminated. While security teams can conduct threat modeling at any point during development, doing it at the start of the project is best practice. This way, threats can be identified sooner and dealt with before they become an issue.
